안녕하십니까. 국립인천대학교 코퍼스연구소의 소임을 맡고 있는 정채관입니다.
‘코퍼스(Corpus)’는 언어의 살아있는 모습을 있는 그대로 담아낸, 우리 말과 글의 보물창고와도 같습니다. 이는 자연스럽게 생성된 구어와 문어 자료를 체계적으로 수집하고 갈무리하여 컴퓨터로 분석할 수 있게 만든 것으로, 오늘날 현대 사회의 복잡다단한 현상을 읽어내는 투명한 창(窓)으로서 그 중요성이 날로 커지고 있습니다.
미국 버클리 대학의 사례가 잘 보여주듯, 이제 코퍼스 연구는 단순히 언어적 기호를 분석하는 차원을 넘어섰습니다. 비언어적 특징까지 포괄하여 인간의 의사소통 능력을 함양하고, 나아가 인간의 행동 양식과 소통의 본질을 깊이 있게 이해하는 데 중추적인 역할을 하고 있습니다.
저희 코퍼스연구소는 이러한 시대적 흐름과 학문적 요구에 부응하고자 지난 2020년 1월 22일 설립되었습니다. 인문·사회, 문화·예술, 그리고 이공계를 아우르는 다양한 분야의 빅데이터를 바탕으로, 경계를 허무는 학제 간 융합 연구를 실현하고자 합니다.
우리는 양질의 코퍼스를 구축하여 학문적 교류의 지평을 넓히는 것은 물론, 단순히 학문적 탐구에 그치지 않고 우리 사회가 당면한 문제를 해결하는 실질적인 실마리를 제공함으로써 국내외 학술 공동체의 발전에 기여하고자 합니다.

Greetings,
I am Chae Kwan Jung, Director of the Institute for Corpus Research at Incheon National University, South Korea.
A ‘corpus’ serves as a treasure trove of our language, preserving spoken and written words in their living, natural state. It is a systematic collection designed for computational analysis, and its importance is growing daily as a transparent window through which we can interpret the complex phenomena of modern society.
As exemplified by the case of UC Berkeley, corpus research has transcended the mere analysis of linguistic signs. By encompassing non-verbal features, it plays a pivotal role in fostering human communicative competence and deepening our understanding of the essence of interaction.
The Institute for Corpus Research was established to respond to these contemporary currents and academic demands. We aim to realize true interdisciplinary convergence research by bridging big data across the humanities, social sciences, arts, and engineering.
Our goal is to contribute to the global academic community not only by constructing high-quality corpora to expand scholarly exchange but also by providing practical clues to solve societal problems beyond mere academic inquiry.
